'What It Takes' Series 4) Intelligence Analyst

In this article, we will explore the average career path of becoming an Intelligence Analyst in a private company. Using openly available information from ten randomly chosen Intelligence Analyst profiles from LinkedIn, an average CV will be constructed that highlights common experiences, education and other skills to help you understand what it takes to become one.

AN INTELLIGENCE ANALYST

At A Private Risk Company

Prior Education

50% had undergraduate and Masters degrees, while 40% had undergraduate degrees only. 10% had undergraduate, Masters and PHD qualifications

*Subjects included; Arabic, Communications, Criminal Justice, Economics, English Literature, Engineering, International Relations, Public Administration, National Security, MBA, Middle East Studies, Physics and Political Science.

Prior Experience

On average, individuals had at least one internship that had lasted for 8 months and at least 2 paid positions prior to becoming an Intelligence Analyst

*Internships included at: Language Training Centre, Private Risk Company, Think Tank, Private Commercial Company, Media Company, Freelance, Financial Company, Government, Bank.

*Paid positions included at a researcher at a private risk company, a junior position / researcher in commercial companies, a teaching assistant at a university, and a researcher in a bank.

Language Skills

60% spoke at least 1 additional language to a professional level / fluency, while 40% had no language skills listed.

Additional Skills

60% stated no additional skills, 20% had volunteer experience in the charity sector and teaching, 10% had a publication on a news website, while 10% had courses in I.T., climate change and risk assessment training.

FURTHER NOTES

  • The maximum number of internships an individual completed prior to becoming an Intelligence Analyst was four. The minimum was zero.

  • The maximum length of time for an individual to complete several internships was 19 months. The minimum length of time was eight months.

  • The maximum number of paid positions an individual completed prior to becoming an Intelligence Analyst was seven jobs. The minimum was 0 jobs.

  • 50% of the individuals viewed in this study also had one additional basic language skill in addition the proficient / fluent skill level.
